Making a Great First Impression with Your Front Door
| Product Announcements

Exterior wood doors are a great addition to your home, but they do require periodic maintenance. This includes maintaining the exterior finish or paint, trimming swollen wood, and polishing. The specific maintenance requirements for your front door depend on your environmental condition, but there are some basic ways to protect your front door against the elements.

Check your door hardware.

You should replace your door hardware if the knob, handle, faceplate or hinges are starting to stick. If a part is loose, you may just need to tighten the screw with a screwdriver. At the same time, you should check the foam or rubber lining that runs along the bottom and side of your door. This can help prevent hot and cold air from escaping your home. To check for leaks in the weather stripping, close your door and hold your hand along the bottom to feel for a draft.

Remove chipped paint.

You can remove loose paint chips with a stiff brush. You can also sand away minor scratches and scuffs with medium-grit sandpaper. Once you remove chips and scuffs, take a soft cloth dipped in soapy water to clean any excess dirt off of your front door. It is especially important to clean the door before you apply a new layer of finish, stain, or paint.

Install an awning or shade.

If your doors face the south or west, they are very exposed to the sun’s rays. Installing an overhang, shade, or awning can drastically help protect your doors from the sunlight. This will help the finish and paint last longer. Be sure to look at your options when deciding which feature to add, as this will help you choose one that doesn’t look out of place.
